January is National Bath Safety Month.

Bathrooms are one of the most high-risk areas for falls in homes and healthcare settings for patients of any age, but the risk is even higher for those who are elderly, immobile, or suffering from physical or mental health complications. For caregivers there are also risks, and bathing a patient is often a physically strenuous activity.

 

There are many ways to make safety a priority in a bathroom or wet room for both patients and caregivers, such as:

Pressure injuries are on the rise, with over 1,300 new ulcers reported in the UK each month, costing the NHS more than £1.4 million every day[1]. No other preventable event occurs as frequently in a hospital environment, with pressure injuries affecting 9.7% of acute care cases and 25.2% of long term acute care cases[2].

This week is Back Care Awareness Week.

 

Back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders affect approximately 70% of adults at some point in their lifetime. Once a person has experienced an episode of back pain, they are more than 40% likely to experience a repeat episode in the same year, and 50% will experience a recurrence at some point in their lives.
